Rebuilding Ground Zero

The National 9/11 Flag Tour will be touring a tattered version of the Star and Stripes recovered from Ground Zero following the attacks on the World Trade Center in September 2001. Thanks to the New York Says Thank You Foundation the flag will be traveling across the country to all 50 states before reaching its destination at the 9/11 Memorial at ground zero. The flag will stop once in each state, where volunteers will gather to help restore the flag for the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The National 9/11 Flag tour will be coming to Las Vegas on May 12, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Historic 5th Street School.

Destroyed in the collapse of the World Trade Center and stitched back together seven years later by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Kansas, the flag has come to symbolize the resilience and compassion of the American people. As a result, "heroes" in all 50 states are being selected to help stitch the flag back to its original 13-stripe format. Once whole again, the flag will become part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center site.
The flag has been displayed at such places as Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Fort Hood, Texas, near Ground Zero in New York, and other sites around the country. The New York Says Thank You Foundation is soliciting nominations for local service heroes, who will be selected to stitch the flag.

The New York Says Thank You Foundation is "looking for men and women of all ages and backgrounds who are shining examples of service and sacrifice to their local communities. Whether this person is a wounded warrior, military veteran, first responder, educator, student, volunteer service leader, or someone who lives their life in a heroic manner, please tell us their story." Click HERE to nominate a stitcher.
A short ceremony will be held at the Historic 5th Street School, when the nominees will be acknowledged and asked to make their stitches to the flag. Following the ceremony, members of the general public will also be invited to stitch the Nevada patch section of the flag, which has been constructed from other tattered flags that were ready for retirement and donated from Nevada.
Thanks to The New York Says Thank You Foundation, United Way of Southern Nevada, the City of Las Vegas, and USAA Saving bank, this is the one and only occurrence of the National 9/11 Flag to the state of Nevada.
