Don't miss your chance to host a VISTA Member for the 2011-2012 year!
What is AmeriCorps VISTA?
AmeriCorps VISTA members spend one year in full-time service to address the needs of low-income communities. All projects focus on building permanent infrastructure in organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
Who can apply for a VISTA member?
Public, private, or faith-based nonprofit organizations and local, state, or federal agencies can apply to host a VISTA member.
What is the host site's role?
Project sponsors must be able to direct the project, supervise the AmeriCorps VISTA member(s), and provide necessary administrative support to complete the goals and objectives of the project. The goals and objectives must be clearly defined and directed toward alleviating problems of low-income communities, and meet the regulations of the AmeriCorps VISTA program.
One consistent goal for every AmeriCorps VISTA project should be the sustainability of the project by the sponsoring agency and the low-income community after AmeriCorps VISTA project sponsorship ends.
Why might someone choose to become a VISTA member?VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more.
By serving through VISTA, members gain new skills, friends, and experiences-plus get the satisfaction that comes from helping others. During each members term of service, they also receive a modest living allowance, health care, and other benefits. And, upon successful completion of their term of service, they can choose to receive either a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.
Is there a cost to host a VISTA member?
Yes, there is a one time cash match of $1,500 for a full time (12-month) member due prior to the start of the members term of service. If your organization is selected to be a host site you would receive an invoice for the full amount. Please do not submit payment until you receive an invoice or notification that you have been selected as a 2011-2012 host site.
Can I apply for more than one VISTA member?
If your organization has more than one program that would benefit by a VISTA members service you may submit a seperate application for each program. Submitting mutiple applications does not guarantee placement of multiple VISTA members at one organization.
How many VISTA member positions are available?
For the 2011-2012 program year there are six available VISTA member positions. VISTA members will be placed at host sites that have programs that best fit the VISTA mission of fighting poverty with passion, show the best opportunities for sustainablitiy of the project by the organization and community members after the VISTA's term of service and show potential for significant measurable impact on the southern Nevada community.
When would the VISTA members start?
Applications are due by 5PM, Friday, May 20th in order to begin the VISTA member recruitment process. We are hoping to process all potential candidates in time to attend Pre-Service Orientation in late July so they could start their term of service July 29th. If candidates are not processed in time for the July 29th start date there may be a possibility of a Pre-Service Orientation in late August with an August 26th start date.
