Marvelous May Recap

Great things happened in the month of May! Volunteers and community members were able to take part in the New York Says Thank You Flag Tour, the NALC Food Drive and tax preparation volunteers through the Earn It Keep It Save It program were recognized for their hard work and contributions to our community. Click HERE for more highlights.

New York Says Thank You Flag Tour
On Thursday, May 12th, United Way of Southern Nevada's Volunteer Center hosted the New York Says Thank You Foundation's National 9/11 Flag. The flag was destroyed in the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and is now on a journey across the United States in a quest to be mended. For the flag's one stop in the state of Nevada, it came to the Historic 5th Street School. Local volunteers and hometown heroes came to repair the flag during the afternoon. Nevada will forever have a stitch of history in the The National 9/11 Museum in New York City.

NALC Food Drive
On May 14th, the National Association of Letter Carriers held the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in southern Nevada. Thanks to the partnership between NALC, Albertson's, Three Square & United Way of Southern Nevada along with the generous donations of southern Nevada residents, 372,789 lbs of food was collected and distributed to 26 food pantries throughout the community! United Way of Southern Nevada would like to thank all of the volunteers that participated for the food drive and everyone who donated. Everyone's efforts truly made a difference and are greatly appreciated.

EKS Recognition Event
2011 was a great year for growth for the Earn It Keep It Save It collaborative. Over 200 volunteers participated in preparing over 6,000 returns, which brought over $8 million back to our community. These volunteers assisted in a 46% increase as compared to last year. Volunteers not only helped to prepare tax returns, but they also coached clients on their refunds and tax law. These tremendous volunteers worked hard to make a difference in our community. We celebrate them!
